Terminology
During your study of Tae Kwon Do, you will begin to pick up some common words that are used in the studio. To familiarize yourself with the vocabulary, we have listed some common words and phrases along
with their meanings.
- Ki-Hap – This is the yell of Martial Arts, often heard as Eye-Yah.
The yell is done to expel air from your lungs for reducing the chance of injury if hit, and to increase power when striking. - Chamber – This refers to the bending of your knee before kicking.
- Leading Leg – A term often used when doing sparring drills.
This refers to the leg in the front of the stance. - Switch – Refers to changing stances from one side to another.
- Charyut – Kung Yet – Korean phrase for “Come to Attention & Bow”.
- Chunbi – Pronounced “Choon-Bee”, means ready position.
- Barro – Pronounced “Borrow”, means to return to ready position.
